It is with a very sad and heavy heart that we must announce that Beatriz passed on Thursday December 27th, 2012 from the disease that she battled for so long. She was an inspiring and truly special person. Her loss is felt deeply, but her work will continue to affect many still to come.
We, the Anti Cancer Team, are committed more than ever and are working harder than ever to bring Beatriz's last work to completion. We are humbled to be able to participate in this very important project and are grateful for your continued support.
The Anti-Cancer Survival Kit is designed for people living with cancer, their family and friends, and those who never wish to get cancer in the first place.
Designed by a group of artists, designers, and researchers with a personal stake in cancer, who are frustrated by a lack of successful prevention and treatment options, and are motivated by a desire to share the information and experiences they've gathered over the years, the Anti-Cancer Survival Kit is simultaneously practical, playful and pedagogical in its approach.
“It’s the kind of kit I wish somebody would have given me as a gift, when I was first diagnosed three years ago,” says Beatriz da Costa, the initiator of the the project. Beatriz had dealt with the disease in different forms since diagnosed with her first cancer at age 14.

THE KIT WILL BE COMPOSED OF THE FOLLOWING:
A coffee-table style illustrated book providing guidelines for different anti-cancer dietary approaches, a list of cooking ingredients, a set of recipes, scientific information regarding the anti-cancer activity for each ingredient, as well as a summary of known carcinogens and carcinogen producing industries.
A comprehensive online research database, containing links to scientific studies regarding the herbs, mushrooms, vegetables and other food items referenced in the book.

WHY BUILD THIS KIT?
Cancer is an increasingly common disease and the ambition of former President Richard Nixon’s War On Cancer, has unfortunately fallen short of it’s promise.
Although research has certainly advanced the treatment options for certain cancers, we are far from being able to cure most forms of it. Significant funding has shifted to “early detection,” but unfortunately almost none towards prevention. Environmental conditions such as exposure to carcinogens and lifestyle are the leading factors in cancer development, yet very little is being done to change these conditions. Public education is practically non-existent on these issues, forcing citizens to protect themselves, and to resist societal pressures that lead towards unhealthy lifestyles.
Another problem is that communication between hospitals is often quite poor. Patients are left struggling to do the research to figure out their own "best treatment."
It has become increasingly common for informal patient networks to help each other find the right medical trial, hospital, doctor, treatment option/plan, etc. The Anti-Cancer Survival Kit aims to support these types of shared knowledge resources, providing patients and their loved ones with the tools they need to make it through an incredibly difficult time. The kit focuses on lifestyle, nutrition and general awareness of health. It also includes a database of natural compounds (supported by scientific evidence) that are known to posses anti-cancer properties, putting emphasis on the importance of non-allopathic medicine as an important supplement to prescribed treatment.
